Stuff.

October 14, 2008

I never realized until this year when I moved out of my apartment in Bowling Green- just how much stuff I carry around with me through life. With the help of Emily, I managed to take several big boxes full of things to the salvation army- and so much furniture. Even still- I filled my mini van and my dad’s Ridgeline full of boxes and we drove down the highway and unloaded those boxes into my room full of stuff.

I am feeling the consequences of my pack-rat like habits today. I have so much stuff, and honestly- I don’t know if I really need anything in here. I have been slowly moving my clothes (a definite pared-down version of the wardrobe I had before) to Columbus this summer, and all of my  kitchen and home items are there too. I packed a box with photo albums, old journals (there were about 10 full ones!) my diplomas, and other memory type items. Besides that sort of thing, I don’t know really what else I would need.

I signed up for freecycle in Columbus, and I follow it to see if someone might need something that we are trying to get rid of. I think that participating in that is just as good, if not better than using the goodwill system. There are always people needing specific things, and almost all of the time- there is someone who has that thing and is willing to pass it along. I am thinking of posting everything I have here…

I just need to finish convincing myself that I don’t need this stuff in my life… it makes it harder to see what is really important.

I know the feeling. Word of caution though – pack rat tendencies increase dramatically post marriage. I don’t know why but they do. Just thought I’d give you the heads up.

Oh! You (or someone else) needs to by balloons for the number of days left till your wedding plus one special one for the wedding day and tie them to the mail box. Then every day you untie one, let it go and make a wish. It eases the freaking out tendency. 🙂
