Our dear friend, the best man in our wedding, David’s best friend since childhood was in a horrible accident over the holiday weekend.

He and his fiance were riding their bikes on a bike path in Baltimore where they live. The path is right next to a main road, and there was a car wreck- causing one of the cars to spin out of control- right into Mike as he was riding on the path. His fiance, Jen was able to get out of the way in time, but Mike froze and the car hit him, hard.

He broke both arms, both legs, fractured his skull in several places, and broke bones in his back.

He’s in an induced coma while the doctors are doing several surgeries. Today- he had 5 titanium plates and several pins put in his face to put it back together. He has several surgeries lined up to repair the rest of his broken body. The doctors did a CT scan, and his organs seem fine, as well as his spinal column- which is beautiful news. His fiance told us he’s got at least 5 more weeks left in the hospital, and several months in a recovery facility. The doctors also said that he’s got at least 6 months before he’s back at a tolerable level of pain. My heart is breaking as I type this again.

Mike is THE MOST joyous person I know. He has the best attitude and look-out on life, and I am confident that he has the will to come out of this on the other side. I do, however, think that he needs more than a sunny disposition. He has a long, hard road ahead of him.

I ask that you keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers… pray that he keeps his spirits up as much as he can, that the healing process goes well, that he safely comes in and out of surgeries, and that he can once again run, walk his dogs, garden, hike, and get back on his bike like his idol, Lance. Pray that his family and fiance find the strength to help him through this long healing process, and pray that he continues to find his joy- even while broken and in pain.

Praying now for Mike and his family.
Does he have a caringbridge site yet? It could help them to keep people updated, put out bulletins, request help of any kind, prayers, and receive encouraging messages, etc. We found that it saved TONS of energy and kept the phone calls to a minimum! I hope this helps:
Bless you…you are a good friend!

One more thing: have you (or Mike’s family)read about Stephanie & Christian Nielsen, who were badly burned in a plane crash last year? Her blog is: I can’t recommend it enough as a first-person account of coming back from injuries that were life-threatening. The accident happened in August, 2008, so the recovery begins there (she has archives on the blog). Her sister (cjane) took over her blog while she was in a coma, and then when Stephanie was well enough, she resumed writing her own. I hope it might provide inspiration and hope.
